More Youths with Insulin Pumps

My name is CARLOS MARTINEZ, I am 9 years old and I live in Oviedo, Spain.

In Chritsmas 1997, when I was 7 years old, I began feeling bad and so I went to the hospital, they told me that I had DIABETES.

At The beginning I was very well, but I could not eat anything; at the birthdays parties I could not have lunch like other children, neither at the same hours and I felt different seeing others eating and I could not eat anything besides I had to be with rigid schedules.

During summer although I go to bed late, I had to get up early the next day and I wanted to sleep the whole time, if we went out to eat, everyone had to eat when I ate and it was a problem, I always, had to make exercise after eating, even if it rained or it was cold.

A few months later the NPH insulin stop working properly, i always had very high values between 300 and 400 then they gave me more insulin and it was still worst, they inject me six times a day even at night, my parents, had to get up twice every night at 3 am and 6 am in order to inject me Lispro insulin and spite all the refforts my glycated haemoglobin increased up to 8 %.

Then we discovered the Dr. Antuña de Alaíz Diabetologic Clinic and they were helping us. They began to inject me three times a day, but it did not work, I continued with very high values, after that, they stop the NPH insulin, and the changed to humalog and regular insulin, I began injecting me four times a day since I do not improve, they decided to put me the insulin pump,

At the beginning the catheter bothered me but later it stoped bothering, on the other hand the catheters lasted a very short time, but then they lasted 3 or 4 days.

An advantage of the pump is that you do not have to follow schedules, you wake up when you want, you eat when you want and if you do not want to eat you do not have to, in the birthdays parties I eat the same just like other children and at the same time they eat, if I go out to eat I do not have to eat fast like before, neither I have to make exercise after each meal and I also have better values, and the glycated haemoglobins are lower, is wonderfull.

They put me the pump on June 1999, when I was 8 years old, by that time I was the youngest boy in Spain wearing an insulin pump. I went to the hospital for a check up on September 1999 my glycated haemoglobine was 5.9 %

The next appoinment, on December 1999, the glycated haemoglobin was in 5.2 % I gained 10 kilos and I grew 4,5 centimeters, I play soccer at the school team and I do the all same stuff than other children.

Another advantage with the Pump, is that they inject me every three days in order to change the catheter and my parents stopped getting up at nights so many times, I am very happy and I write this letter in order to help other children with the same problem, and let them know that they will feel much better with the pump.

Their lives can be much better with a "little help2 from an insulin pump and I say that after wearing "my pump" 18 month and I intend to wear it until the moment when the cure of diabetes will become a reality.
