How does not re-using your own needles reduce the risk?

Insulin contains a very powerful disinfectant - m-cresol - so having
injected yourself, the needle does not provide a terribly fertile area for
bugs to multiply before the next injection.

Or might you get spots of blood on the outside of the needle which might
allow bugs to multiply away from your immune system?

Just curious...

But clearly it's not just a pump problem.
