I was wondering the same thing. Won't his immune system, which attacked
his own beta cells, attack these too? Or do the immunosuppressant drugs
he takes as a transplantee prevent this? And if so, why don't we all
take immunosuppressant drugs, because wouldn't our bodies grow new beta
cells eventually?
Radio 4 said they were trying to produce "synthetic islet cells" to
implant. Does anyone know if that's the same as cloning the patient's
own cells (stem cell stuff etc.) or something different?
