Re: [IPk] BDA Response
Rather depressing letter this morning from the BDA this morning, from Dr
Felix Burden. He describes himself as Chairman of the Diabetes Advisory
Committee (is this the same committee that the Chief Executive, Paul
Streets, described as the Diabetes Care Advisory Committee?) Has anyone
else received the same letter?
Felix Burden writes:
3 March 2000
Dear Mr Neale
Thank you for sending me your letter about your insulin infusion pump. I am
delighted that it is helping you so much.
I am sure that you understand that the BDA's priority has been to change to
insulin pump (crossed out) needles provided free because this would benefit
so many people and is relatively cheap. Unfortunately the costs of pump and
pump paraphernalia is very high and as I am also sure you know, in gerenal,
there is no evidence that pump therapy is preferable to separate
injections, though I am sure there are, like yourself, individual
exceptions to this.
I believe that pump therapy would have to be presented to the government
set up organisation NICE and given the fact there is no much evidence in
favour of pumps, I doubt whether NICE would find in its favour.
One of the other problems however about pumps at the moment in the UK is
that very few of us have much experience in their use.
Dr A C Burden, Chairman of the Diabetes Advisory Committee
I find the content of this letter and his attitude frankly scandalous. He
is a senior diabetes specialist, a vice-chairman at the BDA, and no doubt
wields great influence. He is clearly unfamiliar with the relevent
published medical literature, and expresses no interest in furthering the
availability of this treatment method.
I shall be forwarding Dr Burden's reply to Dr Michael Hall, the Chairman of
the BDA who wrote to me last week. If Dr Burden is chairman of the
committee preparing the policy document on pum therapy to be presented to
the trustees, it does not bode well...
