Reagrding setting up a charity, (most of) the legal advise will be provided
by the charities commission (wesite) www.charity-commission.gov.uk .
Some one who may be of great use is Jenny Hirst, a former trustee of the
BDA who got fed up with it and started, basically from scratch to form the
charity IDDT (Insulin Dependant Diabetes Trust), which had as its original
principal bringing to notice the problems that Human Insulin can cause. She
spends just about every minute of every day working for the charity and
overcame all the problems of setting up a charity from nothing.
Their email address is email @ redacted, website
www.ndirect.co.uk/iddt, last summer they did an article on pumps (featuring
John Neale), which preceded the BDA's article on the same subject and if
one so wishes to think was the cause of the article appearing in Balance.
The most important factor about a new charity is that you have to really
be sure that your enthusiasm will not dwindle for a long time and be
prepared to give all your spare time to it. Many charities setup and last
no more than a few months, leaving the founders in debt.
