[IPn] It's always something.

Some of you may have noticed that the mail service has been a bit
erratic in the last few weeks. The mail service for Insulin Pumpers
is provided by an aging unix server that among other things serves
mail, houses the databases for IP, the robot services that update the
statistics on a number of web pages as well as digest and browser
services. A number of factors have "conspired" to affect the
performance of the server so it is really on its last legs. The
motherboard is very old and began to throw memory errors several
months ago. The operating system is smart enough to recover
gracefully when this occurs, but it usually means that a message is
lost in the process -- the incidence of lost message has increased
markedly in the last few weeks!!! The primary disk drive has
recently started to make "funny" noises -- not a good sign -- and to
top it off, the list has grown to the point where the limited memory
in the machine (which is maxed out) is no longer adequate to process
the daily volume of mail.

There have been numerous soft crashes and one major hard
failure in the last couple of months and it is now (past) time to
upgrade the server. Insulin Pumpers has received some donations of
used equipment, however, these are not up to the task at hand and
monies would have to be spent to put them in working condition with
no guarantee that the performance would be any better than the
current system.

Bottom line, Insulin Pumpers needs to raise ~$850 that is not in the
operating budget to replace/upgrade THE server that does the lions
share of the work in bringing you the services that everyone now
enjoys. This plea is NOT part of the regular fund drives that occur
quarterly and is above and beyond the operating budget which has no
provision for capital spending. So with that said, please contribute
your nickles and dimes, $10's and $20's so that the upgrades can be
made before this poor machine turns its little toes skyward and
expires completely.
