[IPk] Pump use in Type 2s

A few studies have been conducted using pumps in Type 2s who have failed oral therapy and are not achieving acceptable control with injections .

For well selected pts. the results were very good .

Insulin doses were reduced by more then 40% and hba1c levels improved . Also there was no weight gain which is one of the concerns of treating Type 2 patients intensively .

The regular small pulses of insulin delivered by the pump allow the patient to become less insulin resistant and avoid problems of high peripheral insulin levels which some believe can be problemmatic and increase hunger and weight gain .

As the insulin resistance improves , insulin doses drop and glycemic control improves .
