For some time, the needles were finer than syringe needles.

For people with poor eyesight, they're a lot more convenient (even for
people who _could_ see if they put their reading glasses on!)

They don't look like syringes, therefore they are less 'medical', less
frightening (to the diabetic, their family and others).
