[IPp] just venting and yes, awareness is the key!

I have heard so many idiotic comments about diabetes this week, I want to
scream.
We went to a big Pumpkin Fest today and ate lunch there. We sat down at a
table, Cameron got out his monitor to check his BG and a lady sitting
across from him said - "I see you have a sugar problem, so do I." I
wanted to say, I'm the one with the sugar problem, I really have a sweet
tooth.... or, he doesn't have a "sugar problem" his pancreas is the one
with the problem! That wasn't an appropriate comment either, so I was
left speechless. I just couldn't believe someone with diabetes called it
a sugar problem... that's even worse than calling it "sugar diabetes".
Cam and I had a good laugh about it later though when he whispered that
he knew more about diabetes than she did and then we joked about it. :)

Someone at church tried to take a cupcake away from him (even tho' I was
standing right there letting him pick out which one we were going to
share) because he surely can't have a cupcake - he has diabetes! I'm such
a horrible mother letting my diabetic son have a cupcake. I must have let
him eat too many sweets, that is why he has diabetes. He'll grow out of
it, he just needs to eat right. (errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.... this is
me growling!)

Other comments this week have been that his diabetes must be reallllly
BAD because he has a pump.... poor lil' thing...
blah, blah, blah...

And to beat them all, he got in trouble with his teacher because he
forgot his medical ID!
Cams school nurse had called because he had a few lows and I asked her to
make sure Cameron had put on his spare ID from his backpack because I
noticed that he forgot the necklace he normally wears. She walked to his
class to tell him what I said and she found out later that he got it
trouble with his teacher for forgetting his necklace. The nurse called me
back and told me this and said she was going to talk to his teacher about
it, because that was not a behavior issue that had anything to do with
school. He didn't get in big trouble, but still!

Sorry, I know this was lengthy, thanks for letting me vent. It sure has
been an unusual week for rude people that think they know it all.

AWARENESS is the KEY!
