[IPp] New Pumper - disconect for sports

I will add my two cents as well. My son began pumping at age 11 and at that
time participated in organized baseball, football, soccer, track and
basketball, as well as gym classes at school. He has always disconnected for
all athletic activities. Most being around an hour in length never really
caused many problems. Baseball has always been the only sport that is a
"problem." There is just not that much activity. With younger age athletes,
most of these events are short in duration. Our problems have come about as
my son became a high school athlete and practices went to 2 hours, with the
disconnect time going close to three hours. A double header baseball game
with travel time can leave him disconcerted for 5 hours. We have found what
works best for him is to combine pump usage with one shot of lantus. You can
read about this approach by checking out any links concerning "the untethered
regimen." I can't remember if you can find a link on the IP page, but I know
you can on the Children With Diabetes web page. But basically it means on any
day he participates in an athletic event he takes a shot of lantus in the AM
that equals 75% of his normal basel rate. The remaining 25% is programmed
into his pump as his basel rate. Then during the school day he just boluses
as normal for any highs or meals, but when he disconcerts for baseball he has
the lantus "on-board." It REALLY helps. My son likes to attach his pump in
the upper buttocks area and with a baseball uniform on this is a very
inconvenient place to reach. So during a game - and between games of a double
header - he checks his blood and if he needs a correction, or if they are
eating between games he just takes a humolog shot. Hope this helps any of you
looking for alternatives.
