RE: [IPp] Dual Wave
Hi Jamie,
I may be missing something obvious, but I don't see how a dual wave will
help with post-breakfast spikes. A dual wave slows down the action of
insulin, and is usually used to match delayed highs related to high fat and
high protein. The post-breakfast issue is kind of the opposite, the food is
raising the blood sugar much faster than the insulin is working.
We've been experimenting with the "super-bolus", posted here by Catherine,
and have had luck. The idea is to bolus for the meal and at the same time
bolus some of the basals for the next 1-3 hrs, then suspend the basals for
that time period. That way there is more insulin on board sooner to match
the spike without a low later. We started with pre-bolusing for 3 hrs of
basal, and that was too much for my 17 mo old. The next day we gave him his
breakfast bolus plus the next 1 hr of basal in a bolus, and suspended the
pump for an hour. And it worked!! His 2 and 2 hr checks are 150-170 instead
of 250-350. I've been doing that for about 10 days now and it's working
great.
Hope this helps.
