[IPp] DKA & heparin

Carol and Dianne,

Both of your notes make sense about the use of heparin. Dianne, I
do remember when I had a hep-lock after baby #3, they used
heparin to flush it with when they would draw blood for testing
(I was on an antibiotic for a serious uterine infection caused by
group b strep following childbirth and they had to test to make
sure I was getting therapeutic levels of antibiotics.)
I think the insulin might stick to the IV bag because of the type
of material the bag is. It is probably not the same as our
tubing. The insulin base may contain a protein or other compound
which might make it sticky and thus adhere to the bag.
