Epidemiologic studies suggest exposure to sunlight, which enhances the
production of Vitamin D in the skin, is important in preventing many chronic
diseases
Wednesday April 21, 12:44 pm ET

CALGARY, April 21 /CNW/ - Vitamin D is significant in the prevention of common
and serious diseases. Dr. Michael F. Holick from the University of Boston in a
recent article published in "The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," noted
that many health benefits of Vitamin D and the role of Vitamin D deficiency are
increasing the risk of diseases including: common cancers, type 1 diabetes,
cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis. On going research and studies are
indicating that exposure to sunlight, which increases the production of Vitamin
D is vital in preventing such diseases.
"We have always maintained that teaching people simply to avoid exposure to UV
light is going to do more harm than good," says Doug McNabb, President of
Fabutan, Canada's Largest Tanning Company. The medical community has created an
unnecessary fear of UV light, when in actual fact, more and more research is
being done on the benefits that can be attributed to UV light exposure. Few
foods contain Vitamin D; therefore it has been determined that Vitamin D from
ultra-violet light, found both through natural sunlight and tanning beds is the
best source for the supply of a persons Vitamin D requirement. Dr. Holick
concludes in his article that those who have increased skin pigmentation or who
always wear sun protection or limit their outdoor activities have increased
Vitamin D deficiency.
"All forms of life need sunlight to survive and it's the regular moderate
exposure to ultra-violet light that will provide these benefits", McNabb goes on
to say. Some of these benefits being that Vitamin D in the body helps keep bones
strong, activates several genes responsible for regulating cell growth, thus
helping to prevent the out-of-control cell division that can lead to cancer,
helps improve high blood pressure and reduces the risk of osteoporosis and
multiple sclerosis.
Fabutan continues to look for ways to minimize the risks and maximize the
benefits of too much or too little UV exposure. Encouraging a balanced, moderate
approach to indoor tanning, and educating our customers with a strong emphasis
on avoiding sunburns has been our focus for over 24 years.
Fabutan is part of the International Smart Tan Network, which is committed to
the research and education of responsible, moderate sun tanning.
