[IPu] An Article in the Herald and Following Up the Research
Hi All,
On 31/8 the Sydney Morning Herald ran an article called "Lunch in the sandpit
may keep diabetes at bay". The article was mostly about a report "National
Diabetes Register - a statistical profile1999-2005".. It reported a
significant increase in T1 across the years surveyed and indicated that
Australia ranked 6th in the world in rates of T1 per 100,000 population.
The article then went on to say that amoung a range of environmental factors a
"hygiene hypothesis" may be a major trigger. Since the National Diabetes
Register report said nothing about the causes of an increase in T1, I
contacted JDRF to follow up what was going on ..... and where did this
"theory" come from.
I suppose I should have known better ... and was advised by JDRF that while
they had discussed a whole range of possible environmental triggers the SMH
had only reported one. They offered to send me an article in relation to
these issues.
The article published by JDRF called "Environment Matters" (I think) is
probably one of the best things I've read about possible triggers for T1
(after your genetic predisposition).
So if you're interested .... I have a link for the Herald article / a link to
the 30 page National Diabetes Register REport and a copy of "Environment
Matters" (though JDRF had some problems sending it by email).
Happy to post this stuff if anyone is interested ...
Warm Regards,
Janette
