[IPu] A bad situation
I wanted to share with everyone an experience that happend yesterday that
made my blood boil. I work as a practice nurse, and im also a T1 (diag.
14yrs, now 26yrs). I had a mother bring her 10yr old son in yesterday
to see the GP and we got talking: I mentioned to her I was also a T1 .
She told me her son had been unwell recently, apparently his school
report mentioned he was getting 'lethargic, drowsy and not paying
attention' at school. Mum said she questioned her son about this and he
told her he didnt know what his sugars were like at school because his
teacher told him he could not test as it was 'dirty and un-hygienic' and
if he wanted to do that he could wait for the bell at morning
tea/lunchtime and find a place on his own to do this. This childs
recent HbA1c was 8.1!! Pumping is not an option at present due to the
cost for this family. As you could imagine, I could literally feel
the blood in my body boil and I had to calm myself for a minute. How
dare this teacher treat this child that way, life is hard enough without
the ignorance of others!! I suggested mum organise a meeting with the
Principal to discuss this and also contact the Akl Diabetes Society to
organise some sort of education for teachers. I myself had no problems
at school, in fact teachers were toooo caring and considerate towards
me!! Im disgusted with this and wondered if anyone had experienced the
same. Angeline Powell
