[IPu] Fw: IDI Newsletter - May 2003

The following article appeared in the March edition of IDI Newsletter. In
order to get a full copy of this Newsletter it is recommended that you
should approach www.diabetes.com.au. The 'pdf' format of the original
document means that it is automatically removed when it goes through the IP
main process. This feature is utilised to remove possible virus type
contamination. I will be contacting the International Diabetic Institute to
see if there is a safe way for transmitting future copies of this
Newsletter.

DIET & EXERCISE ARE NOT ENOUGH
Two visiting American scientists
claim that dieting and exercise -two
traditional methods which
people use to lose weight - have
done little to reduce the weight
dangers faced by first world
populations.
They say that because of this,
weight gain and diabetes have
become a twin epidemic which
will create huge socio-economic
costs unless alternative ways of
losing weight can be discovered.
The scientists Dr Ahmed
Kissebah, Professor of Medicine
at the Zablocki VA Medical Centre
in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Dr
John Blangero, scientist at the
Department of Genetics at the
Southwest Foundation for
Biomedical Research in Texas -are
collaborating with the
Victorian-based gene discovery
company Autogen Limited to
isolate the genes responsible
for obesity.
According to Dr Blangero, the
answer to our weight and diabetes
problems lies in our biology.
We are searching for genes
that control a persons propensity
to put on weight.
After that, drugs will be able to be
targeted at such genes, he said.
Dr Kissebah recently completed
a study of 2,200 people from
500 US families to search for
genes that influenced obesity
and diabetes. Dr Blangero, who
analysed the resulting data, said
that several crucial genes had been
discovered, the most exciting
of which is a major gene on
chromosome 3. This appears
to be a significant determinant
of many aspects of this metabolic
syndrome, he said.
Independently, Autogen has
discovered a novel obesity gene
also located on chromosome 3.
The company is now validating
the discovery.
The US scientists believe that
Autogen is on the verge of
locating other major obesity
genes. I believe we will be
able to conclusively identify
new genes, and then we will
have identified one of the causes
of the epidemic, Dr Blangero
said. Finding such genes is like
finding a gold mine. It will lead
to early diagnosis, early prevention
and effective treatment of both
obesity and diabetes, he said.
One day I was sitting with a group
of elderly people discussing our
wishes for the future. The future we
spoke of was not the one we would
see on this earth but the one we
would have when we meet God.
I did not speak of my wish with
the group on that occasion, but
would like to do so today.
I wish for a small house with a
big garden and a lot of trees. I also
wish for a few good friends and
many books, both truthful with
wisdom. That would be the best
company I could hope for.
All of the people I have loved I will
continue to watch over and as I
have come to you God, I hope you
will look after me and love me too.
The thoughts of Bronka Kaplan,
a veteran volunteer of 18 years at
the International Diabetes Institute.
FINDING SUCH GENES IS LIKE FINDING A GOLD MINE. IT WILL
LEAD TO EARLY DIAGNOSIS, EARLY PREVENTION AND EFFECTIVE
TREATMENT OF BOTH OBESITY AND DIABETES
