I definitely agree that the person who has diabetes should take the
most active role in managing their conditon, however, it is important
to have an involved endocrinologist.  For one thing, insulin can be
complicated and takes time to learn.  Also, endocrinologists know what
tests to order and how to interprut the results.  They know how to
screen for both complications and other conditions like thyroid
disease.  And of course we need them prescriptions.  Finally, they can
communicate with other specialists, like opthalmologists.
 
Of course all this is in an ideal world.  Personally I do most of the
changing of doses and such by myself, but enjoy being able to bounce
thoughts off my endo.
