Jan - I am on Medicare (Part A & B) and have a supplement policy
through BlueCross Blue
Shield that pays the 20% that Medicare doesn't. Whatever pharmacy
you use must accept Medicare assignment. CVS and United Pharmacy do
not accept Medicare assignment - I know this from experience. If
you pharmacist won't bill this under Part B then you may need to find
another pharmacy to use.
Medicare does pay for insulin if used in an insulin pump and it needs
to be billed under Part B - Durable Medical Equipment. It is not
billed as a prescription under Part D. The prescription must be
written to show your Total Daily Dose (and have the doctor add in
extra because of priming, etc.). My TDD is around 40 but my
prescription is written for 60 units per day. The script has to say
that the insulin is used in an Insulin Infusion Pump.
If you can use Walgreen's here is a phone number to their Medicare
billing department in Illinois. They accept Medicare assignment and
I have had no problems with them filling my insulin prescription.
My prescription was written showing my total daily does (TDD), that I
am a Type 1 insulin dependent diabetic using an insulin infusion pump.
My Walgreen's wasn't sure how to set it up so I asked them to
call their Medicare billing department since the script has to be
billed under Part B (not as a prescription under Part D if you have
that).
WALGREEN'S BILLING, Danville IL, 1-888-281-0590, Part B Medicare Billing
Supplement must be run and return a 0 co-pay. When I fill the
prescription they still sometimes have problems with but I just remind
them that the supplement must have a "0" co-pay. Thankfully with my
supplement I don't have to pay anything. Hope this helps.
