There is a new virus (email @ redacted) email going around that has been
fooling a lot of intelligent people. This email has all the
appearances of coming from Microsoft advising you to run the "update
patch" that is attached. DO NOT. This email may also have several
logos that appear to be official Microsoft. And there are also links
which DO connect to the Microsoft website, but it is the virus that
is attached that they want you to run. Do not be fooled. Microsoft
does not email out "update patches". Here is some of the text copy
that several Admins have received:

MS Partner

this is the latest version of security update, the "September 2003,
Cumulative Patch" update which resolves all known security
vulnerabilities affecting MS Internet Explorer, MS Outlook and MS
Outlook Express as well as three newly discovered vulnerabilities.
Install now to continue keeping your computer secure from these
vulnerabilities. This update includes the functionality of all
previously released patches

If you receive this email, just delete it. Nothing further is
required, except that you SHOULD get your Anti-Virus program updated
ASAP. This virus was issued on Sept. 18th and has already hit
Category 3 according to Symantec. That means that the virus is very
widespread, but at least it is not as damaging as some viruses.

This may also appear as a notice of email delivery failure from
qmail. It can also be spread through File Sharing networks such as
Kazaa and through IRC.

Best Bet?? Update those Virus Definitions now that they have it
classified. Update early and often (at least once a week)
