Actually, the gym teacher isn't altogether correct about type 2. Type 2 is 
genetic and can be triggered by environmental factors, such as obesity and 
 underexercise. However, you can be an overweight couch potato and never get
type 2
IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE GENES!!!! Even if you do have the genes, there is no 
guarantee you will not get type 2, even if you spend your whole life eating 
properly and exercising regularly. The medical field has bits and pieces of 
 information, but still does not understand all of the mechanisms that
contribute to
obesity, type 2, whatever.

Remember the DPP trial that "proved" diet and exercise could prevent or delay 
type 2? The participants had personal trainers, had nutritionally balanced 
 meals delivered to them, had a high dropout rate and a percentage of the people
who stayed with the program STILL got type 2 diabetes.
