[IP] Virus Problems

This is a general warning for our members that are using MS email programs
such as Outlook Express. There is an insidious virus that gets attached to
email that can be activated just by opening and reading the infected
mail... with this nasty virus you don't even have to open any attachments.
It attacks primarily Microsoft products, so if you are using programs like
MS Outlook Express you are very vulnerable, unless you've applied the
latest patches from Microsoft.

If you use another brand of email program, this warning may not apply to
you. However, basic safe computing practices still apply. It never hurts to
scan for viruses and be very careful in opening up any attachments to mail.

1. Be sure that you are running a virus scanner with the latest virus
definitions. The two most common programs are from Norton and McAfee, but
there are about a half-dozen others out there too. Do a complete system
scan to be sure no problems exist.

2. Make sure that you have the latest patches from Microsoft installed. If
you have Windows 98 or later, there is a Windows Update function that will
automatically take you to the right place. Try

For Windows 95 users, see
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/default.asp for starters.

3. Until your system is clean, please refrain from sending messages to
other people, especially those with MS Outlook Express, etc. You may be
innocently spreading the virus that way.

4. If you do find a virus on your system, see if you can figure out where
you may have gotten it from. It's a good idea to let your friends and other
correspondents know, so they can check and clean their systems too.
