if you can't get the emla you might want to try using ice in a baggy.  hold
the ice where you plan to insert until it is red and dull to touch.  however,
i do recommend trying with either first.  you never know your child may not
see it as uncomfortable.  i have one patient that started with emla and now
that she's grown she still is unable to move to the next level.  she is
completely unable to change a set without it.  this is crippling to her.
