Diabetes is very complicated. Most - but not all - type 1 is auto-immune
(aka type 1A), with positive antibodies. Other possible causes
of (non-auto-immune) type 1 include removal of the pancreas (because of
injury, cancer, etc); damage to the pancreas from inflammation
(pancreatitis - resulting from infection, excessive use of alcohol, etc);
as a complication of cystic fibrosis; from damage to the islet cells by
various medicines or chemicals (steroids, immunosuppressants, etc)
, There is also a small group of people - mostly of African, Hispanic or
Asian origin - who have a special type called 1B. They often have
intermittent insulin deficiency and periodic episodes of DKA; some do
require nsulin all the time.

And that's just the type 1s!!
