It helps a lot to put some ice (in a baggie) on the insertion site
for a couple of minutes before doing the insertion to numb the skin.
There is also a topical anesthetic available called 'Emla Cream'
(sp), but it must be applied a half hour or more before the insertion
and is only moderately more effective than the ice.
