[IP] Re:South Africa!

Hi Caroline!

Wow! I too will be in South Africa soon(!!) :) My husband and I leave
just before Thanksgiving and will be there for almost 4 weeks - home (RI)
before Christmas. We will be visiting Zimbabwe as well, so I understand
your concerns regarding customs with pump supplies. My physician has
provided me with a travel letter, and in addition, it has been noted that I
use an "insulin pump for diabetes" on my immunization documentation. We are
actually staying with friends in both Harare, Zimbabwe and Durban, SA. My
SA friend has Type 1 diabetes too, which is actually how we met! He tells
me that South Africa is quite civilized, that he travels often for both work
and for pleasure & has never experienced a problem with his diabetes
supplies. I am a little worried about Zimbabwe though.... *lol* As I will
be there prior to you, I will email you to let you know how it went, if you
like. Do be sure that you bring all your pump supplies with you, and do
include backup insulin & needles should your pump fail. My SA friend, is
not aware of pumps being used in SA yet. And despite living 20 minutes
outside of a metropolitan area he has had difficulty obtaining insulin on
short notice before..... so, just be prepared. Be aware too that the heat
may be a big problem. OOOOOooooo - I am getting so excited!! Email me, I
would love to chat about this!!!!
