[IP] RE: Medicare and insulin...

 Hi Annie,
Last year (my first on medicare) I had an advantage plan and could not manage
to get insulin covered under part B. Lesson learned.
This year I went to Walgreens and spoke directly to the pharmacist who had
actually submitted a rx for insulin used in a pump under part B before. I also
have
It is important that the rx be written stating "for use in an insulin pump" and
given the number of units per day. Be sure you doc includes the amount you
prime, etc in your total daily dose.
At Walgreens it's always a delay of about a week from my request for a refill
til it's actuallly ready. as they have to clear it through their corporate
medicare headquarters.
My understanting is that CVS will also do it---again speak directly to the
pharmacist. Sometimes it requires a lot more self-advocacy than it should.
it's frustrating to have such a hard time getting what we are allowed by
medicare. Good luck and please keep us posted.
