That's exactly what I was looking for:  Practical ideas for when it's
not possible to weigh (or it is not good for that food anyway, if it's
volume based).  I think the pasta in the glass at a restaurant is a
great idea.  The same would work for rice.  To do this, however, I would
need a book that discusses what TYPICAL carbs are, by volume or weight.
For example, how many carbs in 8 oz (by volume) of pasta, or how many in
1 cup of rice (I believe it's 45).  I know these things can be looked up
in nutrient databases and I've tried that, but they usually have so many
variations that are all across the board in their counts, that it's
impossible to get an accurate estimate of what is typical, or common.

If you measure these things at home, you can learn what it looks like 
fairly rapidly. Likewise, when my daughter and I were first learning, 
we measured them in resturants too. Pasta is best measured by volume 
because the amount of water it retains is directly related to the 
cooking time. The volume don't change but this affects the weight 
dramatically. Most pasta is pretty constant carb by volume. And..... 
water glasses come in standard sizes for most resturants. Knowing 
that you can ask for an empty water glass and easily measure your 
pasta. Might be messy and look a little odd, but it works. BTDT. 
After a while, you'll be able to get pretty close by inspection. The 
same thing works well for rice as well.
