Do try upping the basals.  I've found that when basals are increased, as opposed to boluses, that little bit (just .1 or .2 increase per basal setting), goes a lot further than a lot higher bolus dosages.  You may still have some highs to treat, but your chances of good control under the circumstances are much better with the increased basal rates.  (You may need higher boluses, too, though.  Try it and find out.)
