[IP] Many assume that they will be supportive

Our expectations are generally far beyond the role that family members can take on. Very quickly, they come to rely on your knowledge and expertise. They look to you to tell them what they need to know.
Often diabetic families are frustrated with family for not offering enough support to the diabetic child but come to realize that they are dealing with their own feelings. They feel sorry for all of us and do not know what to do to help. In the beginning, they do not feel comfortable babysitting and we will not let them. Their main role quickly becomes a supportive one- to listen.
