A few thoughts:

Protien test results can be off somewhat as you had mentioned regarding the
dye test earlier.  Don't jump to conclusions so soon.  Wait a while for
things to clear and have the 24 hour urine done again.

Also it appears that keeping a low-normal blood presure is as important to
kidney and eye microvascular disease as is normal level bg's.  As you are
already on ACE's and have good bg control; check out the blood presure as
well.  Don't go for normal range.  Go for low-normal range.  YMMV but it
worked so far for me.
