MiniMed says insulin pumps may have software error
SYLMAR, Calif., Nov 19 (Reuters) - Diabetes control company MiniMed Inc.
(NasdaqNM:MNMD - news) said on Friday it is beginning to notify patients of
a software error which could occur in Model 508 insulin infusion pumps the
company has distributed since October.
The company said the ``rare and minor'' error has been addressed, and all
products shipped beginning Friday contain an upgraded version of the
``A notification containing programming instructions which will eliminate
this potential occurrence has been sent to those pump users who purchased
Model 508 pumps from October 4 through November 18,'' said Alfred Mann,
MiniMed's Chairman and CEO.
The device is used by patients who treat diabetes with continuous insulin
``Our independent medical monitor confirmed for us that this anomaly does
not represent an urgent matter,'' said Terrance Gregg, MiniMed's president
and chief operating officer.
He said the company will upgrade the software in the affected pumps early
next year in addition to its current patient notification.
The estimated cost for that activity is expected to range between $1 million
and $1.5 million.
