MiniMed says insulin pumps may have software error

SYLMAR, Calif., Nov 19 (Reuters) - Diabetes control company
MiniMed Inc. said on Friday it is beginning to notify
patients of a software error which could occur in Model 508
insulin infusion pumps the company has distributed since
The company said the "rare and minor" error has been
addressed, and all products shipped beginning Friday contain an
upgraded version of the software.
"A notification containing programming instructions which
will eliminate this potential occurrence has been sent to those
pump users who purchased Model 508 pumps from October 4 through
November 18," said Alfred Mann, MiniMed's Chairman and CEO.
The device is used by patients who treat diabetes with
continuous insulin infusion.
"Our independent medical monitor confirmed for us that
this anomaly does not represent an urgent matter," said
Terrance Gregg, MiniMed's president and chief operating
He said the company will upgrade the software in the
affected pumps early next year in addition to its current
patient notification.
The estimated cost for that activity is expected to range
between $1 million and $1.5 million.
