Type 1 is not hereditary. But the genetic susceptibility IS hereditary.
Whether or not a person actually gets Type 1 depends on if they
encounter something that will trigger it. 

There are many people who have the susceptibility to Type 1, but never
get it because they never encounter a trigger. That accounts for the
fact that many Type 1's state that they are the only DMer in their
families -- it was never triggered in anyone else. And, of course, since
we're all genetically unique, many family members might NOT be
susceptible in the first place.
