Type 1 diabetes has a very strong genetic component. Science has identified
certain high-risk HLA types, as well as protective HLA combinations, for
example.

The genetic component confers at best a 50% risk. Data from identical twins
show this, as the risk of having Type 1 if your identical twin does is 50%.
Thus Type 1 is genetic and environmental.

I've been under the impression that type 1 was not hereditary.  Is this

true?
