Well it is time to play a new game of " WHAT IF??" What if this =
has happen to you; you lost your insurance and it will be a year before =
you can get something new. But you just got a month supplies-so how do =
you make everything last as long as you can and still be able to stay on =
your pump.
Please REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING IS SOMETHING YOU DO IN A GAME OF =
"WHAT IF?"
No Doctor or RN or Pump trainer or Pump company Or government will =
approve of you doing anything played in a game of "WHAT IF??" First =
lets see what supplies you have and why.

To fill infusion line it takes 26 =
units +/- 7% =3D 27.8 units
For a daily need of =
                 76 units
COM:Always take in account the filling of the line everyday =
because there will be times you
will need too. Also this gives you a backup supply =
of insulin if you need it if you are sick
or break your reservoir. REMEMBER TO HAVE YOUR =
DOCTOR TO WRITE THE Rx=20
                    FOR THIS AMOUNT.
=20
Alright first thing, get your head on right. Remember things can be =
worked out if you think and plan how to get by. Next thing to do is call =
your doctor tell them what has happen ask if they have any tibs and/or =
supplies you can have....your great's needs will be insulin & strips.
=20
I.Site Prep
A.First time ... clean with Hibiclens; clean site with Hibistat; =
clean insulin with alcohol swab;
fill reservoir & infusion set with insulin... insert the needle; =
apply Tegaderm that you have=20
cut in half over the needle site & tape down safety loop. You are =
good for 3 days.=20
B.Second time...clean with Hibiclens; remove old tape & dressing; =
place infusion line so the=20
needle hangs free not touching anything use Betadine to coat 3" =
to 5" of infusion line and=20
the needle and coat the new site on skin; let it dry on the =
infusion set, then remove with alcohol
swab. Let dry then run a 1unit bolus through the line to clear =
any alcohol in the line, insert infusion
needle .. apply the other half of Tegaderm from last time & tape =
down safety loop.=20
COM:Remember to follow sterile technique!! Whenever needles are reused =
you have a greater chance for an infection. IF ANYTIME THE SITE =
HURTS...IS RED...HOT.. TAKE IT OUT!!!!!
=20
II.Why the?
    A. Sterile Gause pads? If you run out of Tegadrem; you can use =
Micrope tape to hold down the=20
needle... but all that tape on skin can hurt so put gause pad =
under part of the needle and tape
down just be sure to cover all of it.
B.Eucerin cream ..... you need to try to kept skin in good shape, =
this can help.
C.Skin-prep....for what it is, help with holding down =
dressing...tape
D.Ketostix... for the times you need to check for Ketone
E.Syringe...... if you need to take a shot.

III.Emergencies Tips
A.If you run out of insulin in the pump before a change you can if =
no other insulin is available you
can fill reservoir with air and push air through the infusion =
line. Remember there is about 20/25 units
in the line,... watch very carefully... check sugars more often.
B.If you need to conserve insulin or batteries because you need to =
take a large bolus or don't have=20
everything you need to fill reservoir or to help batteries last =
longer, you can take it by syringe in
whole units and ten's by pump.
C.This last tib is one to use if your need for insulin is at =
emergence level, there is no other way to get
more .....after removing infusion line from body you can draw out =
the insulin in the line ..donot draw=20
out the last 1'' of insulin... use this to fill new line.... do =
this only if you have no other way of getting
       more insulin.
=20
REMEMBER THIS HAS BEEN A CASE OF THE GAME CALLED "WHAT IF??"
No one would do any of the things in real life, for we all have =
great and caring insurance company?
   =20
=20

=20
        SMILE & BE HAPPY,
            Rodney : -{ )
=20
=20
=20
PS: I wrote this over the last week, I have been with out lights, phone, =
and heat for the last week we had a problem in Omaha, last Sunday.I glad =
to be back on -line.
