[IP] need input on aquacize

Michelle,

Although I have never done aquacize - or any other strenuous exercise in water
- I do exercise every day at noon for approx 45 minutes with a step up bench
and hand held weights. If I have my readings stable anywhere from around 80
to 100 when I start exercising - I give myself a .5 or .75 bolus approx 10
minutes before starting to exercise. Then I also give another .25 2 to 3
times during the 45 minutes of exercise. If I get it just right - I will end
up anywhere from 100 to 130 when I am done with the 45 minutes of exercising.
Took me years - and doing blood sticks every 5 minutes during exercise many
times to figure this out. My CDE still insists that I be at LEAST 150 to
start any exercise - but I do what works for me. If I am 150 when I start - I
will be over 250 when I am done and halfway through basically lose all my
energy from going so high. The exercise I do is very "intense" for about two
minutes out of every 5 minutes - and the stress of the intensity drives up the
blood sugar if you don't counteract.
Since you said you are out of shape and haven't exercised for a while - what
you are doing may not
"seem" intense since you are in the water taking the weight off the joints,
etc. - but you may be stressing your system so that your liver is actually
dumping out glucose that it thinks you need to keep going.
Opposite for me is if I just go out and do a regular speed walking and walk
for an hour or more - then eventually my readings will drop - due to the fact
of continued exercise - but not stressfull exercise.

Maybe next time you can get out of the pool every 10 to 15 minutes and test
and make sure you are not dropping and causing the highs - but maybe the highs
are just from the stress and intensity.

If I lower my basals before exercise - or eat before exercise - I end up way
higher than before I start doing anything intense - then I get irritated as I
feel I basically just went backwards by exercising.

Good luck - and see what testing during the class shows.

YMMV

Trish
