[IP] ADA - Lawsuit Against Philadelphia Police

Important Right to Make Claims in the Association4s Lawsuit Against
Philadelphia Police

If You or Someone You Know Has Been in the Custody of the Philadelphia
Police, Please Read This Important Message About Your Rights.

Three years ago, the American Diabetes Association joined several
individuals to bring a lawsuit against the City of Philadelphia over the
City4s treatment of people with diabetes in police custody. The lawsuit
concerned people with diabetes who were denied access to needed food,
medication, and medical care while in the custody of the Philadelphia
police. The court decided that this lawsuit, Rosen v. City of Philadelphia,
could go forward as a class action on behalf of everyone whom the City4s
actions had harmed.

In March 2003, the parties involved in the lawsuit reached a proposed
settlement. In a significant victory in ADA4s advocacy work, the settlement
spells out the specific actions the City will take in the future to ensure
the proper medical treatment of people with diabetes while in police
custody, and provides for training police officers in the medical needs of
people with diabetes. The American Diabetes Association4s press release
explains more details about the recent settlement.
