Your friend is going through natural steps of grieving upon finding out that
her very young child has something as devastating as T1.   Elizabeth
Kubler-Ross wrote an excellent book on the grieving process.  It was
originally intended for fatally ill patients.

But, it was later found to have much broader applications.  Your best bet is
to be supportive, but realistic about what is going on.

The first step is denial.  There are seven steps.  I only remember about
half of them.

Good luck to your friend.  She is well off to know a person with diabetes
who can help her through what is going on.
