URGENT! CALL YOUR SENATORS. ASK THEM TO SIGN ON TO THE "DIABETES DEAR
COLLEAGUE" LETTER!

Dear ADA Advocate:

We're sending you an emergency E-News this week because we have an
urgent request for you.

Last week, Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), John Breaux (D-LA), James
Inhofe (R-OK) and Kent Conrad (D-ND) sent a "Dear Colleague" letter to
all senators regarding the diabetes program at the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC). They asked all senators to sign on to a
letter to the Senate Labor/Health and Human Services (L/HHS)
Appropriations Subcommittee to support an increase in diabetes funding
at CDC.

As of today, only Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) has signed on. It is
imperative that you call your two senators and ask them to sign on to
the Diabetes Dear Colleague letter.

To find out who your senators are and get their contact information,

What to say when you call (in this time-sensitive case, a phone call is
more effective than an e-mail):

7 Ask for the Legislative Assistant who works on Diabetes and Health
Issues.
7 "My name is ___________ and I am a constituent."
7 "I am calling to urge the senator to sign the Diabetes Dear Colleague
letter sent out last week by Senators Collins, Breaux (pronounced
"Bro"), Inhofe and Conrad."
7 "I am concerned about diabetes because __________"
7 "If you have not seen the letter, have questions about the letter or
if the senator wants to sign on, you can call the offices of Senators
Collins or Breaux."
7 "Thank you for your time and support for people with diabetes."

Thank you for your participation in this pressing matter. If you have
questions for the American Diabetes Association, e-mail us at
email @ redacted

Sincerely,

Michael Mawby
