Nothing about diabetes is simple:

Not all type 1 is auto-immune; there are a variety of other causes 
including pancreatitis, exposure to certain medications, etc.

Many of those with type 2 may eventually get to the point where they
need 
insulin to keep bgs in range, but they are not insulin DEPENDENT - ie,
will 
not die within days if they don't inject - unlike folks with type 1
