Ms. SSPAZ -- you forgot something: The standards for diagnosis have changed 
since 1980 -- numbers for fasting and for random BGs have been lowered. 
Therefore, people who would not have met the criteria in 1980 because they 
were at, say, 130 fasting when the standard fasting number for diabetes back 
then was 160 (or whatever it was) would now meet the criteria because it has 
been decreed that it is clinical diabetes at a fasting of 126 or higher. So 
... it isn't just a population explosion, it's a change in the standards for 
diagnosis as well. BTW, this post pertains to type 2. However, there also is 
an increase in type 1 diabetes worldwide.
