the pump itself is waterproof without the red tappet. The red tappet keeps 
water from getting in the chamber where the cartridge is located, and that 
chember is waterproof from the rest of the pump, but you may get water into 
the cartridge and it may mix with the insulin and contaminate the purity of 
the insulin. The holes are there to allow air into the chamber as the piston 
pushes the plunger upward during use, this is why you must remove the red 
tappet if you fly, so the chamber can equalize pressure inside and out.
