Re: [IP] basal rates

Barb,

Kayla is a little smaller than Erika (51 lbs) but her basal rate is 0.1
during the daytime. You mentioned that Erika runs 0.4 at night but has
been going low in the morning. Kayla has a backwards dawn phenomenon.
She runs a 0.3 basal from 8:00pm until 4:00am and then drops back to 0.1
for the rest of the day. So instead of her needing more insulin just
before she awakens, she needs more as she is going to sleep. Be sure
you read the pumpin insulin book and look at the various graphs on
typical insulin requirements. Oh, and Kayla's carb ratio is much higher
than Erika's. She has a 1:25 - 1:30 ratio depending on the time of the
meal. Of course YMMV, but the little ones seem to have higher ratios.
