[IP] Pizza and Diabetes Interview/Health

Aha! I found it! It was poster No. 2314-PO, from the ADA's 63rd Scientific
Sessions.

A group from Hershey, Penn., tested a normal bolus (all of the insulin at
once); one with half given immediately and the rest as an extended bolus over 4
hours; and half first and half as an extended bolus over 8 hours. There were 26
type 1 subject and they were tested on plain, cheese pizza. The entire group ate
a consistent amount of pizza over a three-day period, using the varying boluses.
Blood glucose was measured using a continuous glucose monitoring system.

The researchers found that the 8-hour extended bolus worked best, with
"significantly less postprandial hyperglycemic exposure with no increased risk
of hypoglycemia."

In comparing day three (the 8-hour extended bolus) to day one (straight
bolus)the reduction was 24 percent for mean glucose. Percentage of time in range
was 32 percent on day 1 and 49 percent on day 3.

Clear as mud? <g>
