More technically, the C-peptide is a small portion of protein that connects 
the front and back of the insulin chain  (one protein strand - c peptide - 
one protein strand) but when the insuling is produced, the body cleaves part 
of the end off - the C- peptide.  So docs can measure the amount of the 
C-peptide to see how much insulin your body is producing.
