How do you explain gluconeogenesis?  Isn't that the process by which the body 
utilizes the amino acids (from the protein), incorporates those into pyruvate 
and then through the complex biochemical pathway produces - hang on to your 
hats - glucose.  But wait, there is more!  Lactate (formed by skeletal 
muscle) also goes through the same process as does glycerol (a product of fat 
metabolism).  All three sources (protein, lactate and fats) potentially can 
produce glucose.  GRANTED - this usually only occurs during periods of 
intense exercise and metabolic starvation, but it does happen.
