i agree that dating "normal" people can be very difficult, because often
they don't know exactly what we are going through and never will.  however,
i have dated someone with diabetes(not a long term serious relationship
though), and also someone with a different chronic illness(10 months and
very serious).  You would think that the fact that they experience similar
things and have an understanding of what you are going through would be
beneficial, but can be more to it than that.  there are some times when i
fall to pieces, and need someone to be there for me, someone to hold my hand
and help me take care of what needs to be done, and to be strong for me.
when 2 people who are in a relationship need this at the same time neither
one gets the support that they so desperately need.  as for "normal" people,
it all depends on the person.  with a little patience and education on the
part of the diabetic, the right "normal" person can be more helpful and
understanding at times than someone with diabetes can be.
