[IP] Anemia; upper GI bleed

	You could have been bleeding small amounts intermittently and not
know it.  When you bleed from high in the GI tract (stomach or first part of
small intestine), the blood gets digested as it passes through your system
and may turn your stool black or darker than usual.  It wouldn't "come out"
as bright red blood, though.  
	Hope this answers your question.  BTW, smart doctor for talking to
you in recovery when you were still "out"!
