Hi Katherine,
I am not sure how long the needle is on the rapid, but remember, that newly
inserted needle is empty.  When your basal is being pumped into you every
three minutes, it will have to fill the needle first before it flows into
you.  So you bolus to fill the needle so insulin will go into you as soon as
you press go.
