Kathleen,

I know the weather in Las Vegas is very hot and dry -- not
much you can do about that.

If I am not mistaken, Birkenstock's have a synthetic sole. 
Have you considered wearing rubber soled shoes (running
shoes, etc.)?  Many nurses wear them in hospitals to
prevent static charges.
